Our Brief History

From its inception, the idea of establishing a school in Ubakala was championed by several key individuals:

Late Mr Onukwuwe A. U.

Late Eze J. E. Onwukwue, The UBA II of Ubakala.

Sir J C Nwabugwu, the convener.

Late H. I. Nwazue.

Late Mr Iruele, the librarian.

Late J. E. Ukejianya.

Late Elder Moses Agomuo.

From its inception, the idea of establishing a school in Ubakala was championed by several key individuals: These pioneers sent delegates to the Education Management Board in Owerri, which was part of Imo State at that time. The school, founded in 1979 on 2,000 hectares of land in Nsukwe, was initially named Boys Secondary School Ubakala. It transitioned to a co-educational institution in 1982 and made its WASSCE debut in 1983, achieving remarkable results.

Significant contributors to the school’s development include Engr. Nnamdi Ezeigbo, who renovated the principal’s office, erected two signposts—one at the express junction and another at the school road junction—and provided free accommodation for Youth Corp members through his mother. Additionally, the 9th Ada Ubakala generously donated notebooks and pens to the students.

Academically, the school has consistently excelled since its establishment, largely due to the support of philanthropists like Sir Ezeigbo, Sir Cyril, and others from New Jersey, who have helped ease the financial burden of WASSCE registration for students. The return of alumni has also positively influenced the academic environment, significantly enhancing educational standards. Their contributions include renovating four classroom blocks, installing a school gate, providing musical instruments, purchasing three whiteboards, goalposts, and two school signboards, and funding part-time teachers and Youth Corp members, as well as supplying footballs for both boys and girls. They have also improved the library by adding textbooks and hiring a librarian. The active involvement of alumni, led by Mr. Sam Ubah, has drawn government attention to the school.

In the past year, 2024, the alumni association (USSOSA) renovated and inaugurated a four-room school block. In 2021, the Abia State Primary Education Board (ASUBEB) constructed a three-room classroom block equipped with essential facilities. Notably, on April 24, 2024, USSOSA celebrated “World Book Day,” awarding scholarships to the top 21 students and enhancing the library with new resources and staff. Another notable alumnus, Mac Donald Ubah, contributed by renovating four classroom blocks. The collaboration of the Ubakala vigilante group and security personnel hired by the alumni association has significantly reduced incidents of theft and vandalism at the school.

General Remarks: The school is recognized as one of the best in Umuahia South, consistently achieving impressive results. Most students exhibit good behavior, though a few need guidance. They frequently return from events with awards. The teachers are dedicated and hardworking, and we appreciate the cooperation of the PTA in supporting the school. However, challenges persist, particularly with vandalism from hoodlums, impacting the Intro Tech laboratory. Additionally, some school buildings, including the examination hall and the Intro Tech hall, are in disrepair.
